Dog behavior Problem, Dog Peeing/Dog Urinating
Dogs will urinate for two reasons besides drinking to much water. Dog peeing can be either submissive behavior or territory marking. In any case a dog urinating with out any control could be a sign of a medical problem and should be looked at by a veterinarian. Dog pee may seem gross to us humans but to a dog it contains scent information which can tell stuff about them.
What is Submissive Dog Urinating
Have you ever reached down to pat a dog and they begin peeing? This occurrence, known as submissive dog urination, is found in dogs with lower social orders or fearful tendencies. They are not relieving themselves because they dislike you or your favorite rug. They behave this way for a number of reasons.
-
High amounts of stress or confusion can cause dogs to have this behavior problem.
-
Poor socialization training can result in dogs being overly shy, fearful, nervous or sensitive around other dogs, people and their environment.
-
The dog's perceived rank in the social pack hierarchy is very low. Dogs in the presence of the dominant dog will show submissive behaviors.
How to Stop Submissive Dog Urinating
1 - Never punish your dog for this behavior. The possible reason why the dog is behaving this way may be a direct result of harsh punishment from prior actions. Be careful not to accidentally reward them for this behavior as well. If you catch them in the act do not give them positive attention.
2 - Try to prevent this behavior through proper socialization training. This will build the dogs confidence and self esteem. You also teach them not to be scared as easily by subjecting them slowly to scary situations.
3 - Interacting with your dog will help them become more accustom to your voice and tone. Playing with your dog and providing fun activities will allow the dog to feel comfortable around you and more relaxed. Obedience training is a great way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog. |
What is Dog Marking or Territorial Dog Urinating
Dogs have a strong instinct to pee not for the sake of relief but to mark out boundaries and show rank order within their pack. This common behavior is not a problem as a result of poor training. We view dog urine as a gross substance with no benefit. Dogs see it as a messaging system to alert dogs of their presence. Dog territorial urinating is often used for a number of reasons.
-
Marking out their boundaries around their property.
-
Calling out to dogs of the opposite sex and alerting them of their mating status.
-
Showing their rank in the pack.
-
Dominance to show what object belong to them or they perceive as theirs.
-
Threat to their dominance from a new dog or baby in the family.
How to Stop Territorial Dog Urinating
1 - Become a friendly alpha dog. For a proper relationship with your dog you should always be the dominant one in the pack. Make sure to show your softer side and interact with your dog. Play with them and provide them plenty of exercise. Remember to follow the common rules when showing your dominance.
2 - Use negative association when you catch them in the act of marking. Unlike submissive urination, territorial dog urinating can be stopped with punishment. If you catch them in the act loudly say "NO", spray them with water or use your can of rocks/coins and shake it loudly to startle them.
3 - Always clean up after your dog's markings. If they are marking territory in the house you have to clean it with a odor neutralizer. If the dog can smell their own urine they will most likely chose to go on that same spot again. Click for the top rated all natural odor neutralizers.
4 - A major deterrent to ending territorial urinating is to spay or neuter your dog. This can put an end to dog territorial urinating. Castrated male dogs will mark less territory for dominance. Spayed females will stop marking territory since they can not mate. By spaying and neutering your dog it is possible to eliminate this behavior. Every now and then you may find your dog performing old habits but it will not be as frequent.
5 - If the dominance issue is a result of a new family member, child or pet. Then proper socialization training will be needed to show the new house member is not a threat to your dog. Plenty of interaction between the two will be important.
6 - If you do not want to neuter or spay your dog then another option is doggy diapers. |
As with submissive dog urinating, if you feel the dogs behavior is excessive then please consult with a veterinarian. Urinary tract infection or other health related issue could be the cause.
